General Superintendent
James Pomeroy Whitmore, Jr.
A native of Elko, Nevada born August 11, 1923, J.P. Whitmore arrived in White Pine County as a child where he would live until he passed away on January 11, 1979. He first worked at the mine in 1941 as an electrician. In 1950 he married Arva who was a secretary in the mine offices. Together they would have three daughters. He served in the army during World War 2.
In 1960 he transferred to the Nevada Northern taking the position as Chief Electrician for the next four years. He was then promoted to the position of General Shop Foreman in 1964. In 1974 he was promoted again to the position of superintendent and then to general superintendent following the retirement of H.M. Peterson.
With this promotion he moved his family into the General Superintendent’s home across the street from the Transportation Building. An avid hunter and fisherman he spent much of his time outdoors.
He was also highly active in all aspects of community life, serving on the City Council and being appointed Mayor of Ely. He was also active in numerous community organizations.
His sense of humor as well as his constant support and encouragement of those around him made him a favorite amongst the railroaders and community members. A loving grandfather, he would wrap up a visit by his daughters by telling them to “take your offspring and go home!”
Sadly, he suffered heart damage and was rushed to Sacramento,California where he died in surgery.
