Cashier

Percy W. Hull

A native of Elko, Nevada, Percy was born to Quincy and Mary Hull on June 19, 1886. An early Ely pioneer, Quincy moved the family to Ely and was appointed the town’s second postmaster. In 1909 Percy was working in Salt Lake when he applied for a clerk position with the NNRy. Moving back to Ely he soon became a cashier and finally paymaster for the railroad.

His duties required him to compile the hours worked by employees and distribute their pay every Friday. In this capacity he kept the payroll records for 30 years. Though this position he knew, almost on a personal basis, every employee of the company.

Percy knew many of the notable early figures of the railroad including Mark Requa, S.W. Eccles and L.G. Cannon. For Cannon’s funeral, Percy was selected as a pallbearer.

In July of 1923 he became one of the first automobile owners in Ely when he purchased a Buick Sedan. On August 19,1923, he would marry his wife Helen who was a nurse at the Steptoe Valley Hospital, the couple would have two children. The newlyweds were called to the office of General Manager George L. Hickey and presented with a chest of sterling silver and an electric percolator as a gift from the employees of the railroad. They then set off in his new Buick on a trip to the Grand Canyon.

In addition to his work on the railroad, Percy and C.O. Fleming built the Ely theater on East Aultman in 1916 with Percy doing the design. He would later design and build the Central Theater.
Following a long retirement and successful theater career, he passed away on October 10, 1971.
