Chief Conductor
William G. Hohlt
Bill Hohlt was born and raised in San Francisco California. After graduating high school he went on to attend the College of Idaho studying business and economics. He then returned to California and went to work for Standard Oil, working there for 38 years until his retirement.
During a vacation, Bill and his wife Hanne stopped in Ely and visited the railroad. With her encouragement he became a member of the museum and was on track to volunteer on the railroad.
Starting as a “flunky” doing odd jobs around the property, he became a student brakeman and finally a conductor.
Following his wife’s passing he moved to Ely full time and was promoted to the position of Chief Conductor. He serves as the primary face of the railroad to the public, greeting passengers on the train and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the train. Not one to shy away from hard work, he is often found doing many other odd jobs.
For his position he ordered custom made conductor’s suits to accurately reflect the position. In this fine suit he is one of the most requested crew members to stand in visitor’s photographs.
Bill’s long standing service and dedication was recognized with a reserved parking spot next to the Transportation Building where passengers can often see his vintage cars parked and with a tree planted in his name on Arbor Day.
He serves as a member of the White Pine Public Museum Board of Directors and is well known in the community.
